In a country that’s supposedly the giant of Africa? What a mismatch and a total abuse of the word “giant”. Could I be in the right place or I am just a wanderer wandering about? How can a people cope in this diminutive, prison-like environment; I bet most prison facilities are far better than these horrific sights and crawling blood sucking invested bunkers.
I wonder how I got here in the first place. I guessed I brought this experience upon myself. This is unarguably the worst experience of a sleepless I have had in my years of existence. I was practically awake hoping that morning will come or hear the cock crow or something. This is 02:51am Nigerian time and I have had to discontinue my sleep because of the dilapidated and inhumane hostel facility paraded by our federal institutions.
How can students live and read in this atmosphere? God, what has happened to us as a human? Could this be blame on the government who have succeeded in thinking they are doing the masses a favour by creating substandard and underfunded schools or the students who have refused to imbibe a healthy maintenance and proper hygiene culture and lacks the united voice to ask for what’s their right? The sight of the hostel disgust me and almost made me want to vomit.
How can human do this to themselves? How soon we forget who we are at the seeming rise to power or possession of a meagre wealth. Oh, Lord, save this nation from herself.
Having applied for a youth leadership academy and gone through series of tests to be finally selected as a participant, I eventually got the confirmation mail and was asked to resume camp the following day. I was happy and elated not only at the news of being selected among the numerous applicants but also because the camp is billed to take place at a federal institution. My first-time public school experience, so I was excited and happy at that one single fact. I had always wanted to see what it looks like even though I wasn’t expecting a four-star hostel, I was at least looking forward to something decent. Lo and behold, what met my eyes were something I couldn’t comprehend. Hmmn, I promise to continue this piece with picture evidence and more write ups.
